In 1993, Ben and Ana are on their way home from a party when their car breaks down on a deserted road. They manage to flag down a truck for a ride, but the driver, Eddie Ward, turns out to be a serial killer. Ben escapes, but Ana is abducted and never seen again. Ben and his daughter, Fiona, eventually move away from the area. Although Eddie was convicted of several murders, he insists on his deathbed years later that he did not kill Ana. Fiona, struggling with emotional issues, decides to confront Eddie to uncover the truth about her mother's fate and returns to the place where she spent her childhood summers. Meanwhile, a woman disappears under circumstances eerily similar to Ana's case. Suspicion falls on Eddie's adult son, Jason, as fears arise that he might be following in his father's footsteps.Â
Keep This for Me by Jennifer Fawcett is not only an engaging and suspenseful mystery but also an intriguing examination of the effects of generational trauma and the challenges of motherhood. Before her disappearance, Ana struggled with postpartum depression, and Fiona is currently suffering as well. Eddie's family has had to deal with the shame and stigma inflicted on them as a result of his crimes. The story alternates between the present and periods from Fiona's and Eddie's pasts, as well as the day Ana disappeared, unfolding through different POVs. The settings, particularly the atmospheric lake and a hidden cave, enhance the story. It's a good, solid thriller for your enjoyment.
