At 31, Mona Bucket is striving to succeed at her marketing firm. She's never come to terms with the loss of her father, has a strained relationship with her mother, and has channeled all her energy into her job. But after a difficult and important client enraged her in a meeting, Mona was unable to hold her tongue. As a result, she was placed on mandatory leave, sending her home to her small apartment at Valleyview Apartments in Calgary, a deteriorating place she always viewed as temporary, planning to move out once she could afford to. After her landlady, Irene, is injured, Mona offers to help with her dog. This prompts Irene's niece, Lana, a successful realtor, to ask Mona to oversee the building while Irene recovers. Lana wants to get the building, which is over a hundred years old, in better shape so that she can quickly sell it to developers without Irene's knowledge. Lana promises to find Mona a place in a nicer building and would consider bringing her business to Mona's firm. But as Mona starts to get to know her neighbors, people she has never paid any attention to during her five years in the building, she forms new connections and friendships. Mona soon realizes that Lana's plan to displace everyone in the building must be stopped.
You'll Love It Here by Natalie Sue was a satisfying book filled with a group of endearing characters. The residents of the building are not the odd people Mona had always thought of them as. They have interesting life stories and admirable strengths. The book doesn't contain any surprises, just a nice feel-good story about the importance of community and compassion, sprinkled with humor, and a little romance. Enjoy it.
