The Unknown - an eerie, tense thriller.

Marin Keane's acting career is struggling. Her most significant role was playing a bridesmaid in an eczema commercial. However, when she lands a part in a film directed by the famous Ronan Peters, things are looking bright. The movie centers on the real-life mystery of a group of women who vanished in 1926 from New Avelon, a small, remote island in Vermont. After each disappearance, the woman's dress was discovered hanging from a large tree. The cast is headed by the acclaimed actress Violet Wright, and also features Susie Hutchinson, a former Disney star Marin had idolized. To prepare for the filming, the cast must spend a week on New Avelon, living in period attire without electricity, which means no cell phones! The movie is based on the diary of Daisy Rue, one of the missing women. Marin is given the diary to help her prepare for her role as Daisy. As she reads it, events on the island begin to mirror Daisy's experiences. Marin realizes something is very wrong. There are eerie sounds, strange visions, a séance that goes awry, and soon, disappearances, with dresses hanging from tree branches.

Riley Sager showcases his talent for eerie, psychological thrillers in The Unknown. Although I typically steer clear of horror and paranormal themes, I make an exception for this author because there's always added layers behind the story. This highly atmospheric tale was an enjoyable ride, enriched by the audio version. Although some parts were foreseeable, the major twists were well-executed. If you're a fan of Sager, this book is surely on your list, and it will not disappoint.
