In Melbourne, Australia, Detective Sergeant Judith Lee interviews Alexis Turner, a university student who claims that Robert Walker, a psychologist she was referred to by the school, assaulted her during their session. A decade earlier, another woman had filed a similar complaint against Walker. At that time, Judith dismissed the complaint and failed to assist the young woman, an error in judgement that has continued to haunt her. Determined to correct her past mistake, Judith discovers that Alexis lied about being a student and has disappeared. As mysterious packages with cryptic notes are delivered to seemingly unrelated people, Judith works to uncover their connection. Interspersed is information from the past involving two sisters. There's initially no relationship in these passages to the present-day investigation, although it is clear there will be.
Three Reasons for Revenge by Dervla McTiernan is an intricately woven thriller that will keep you guessing. The characters, including Judith Lee, have complicated backstories. There are some well-done twists and surprises as Judith tries to get to the truth in a case that keeps getting more challenging, while also trying to save her own reputation and career. It's an engaging, tense and unpredictable read.
