PJ Halliday is 63 years old and lives in the small town of Pondville, Massachusetts. He still loves his ex-wife Ivy, who is set to marry his best friend, Fred. Fifteen years ago, one of his daughters died in an accident, and his 26-year-old daughter Sophie isn't very fond of him, largely because of his excessive drinking. When PJ learns that Michelle, the "one who got away," is now a widow, he decides to drive to Arizona to win her over. His plan takes a turn when he becomes the guardian of newly orphaned Luna, 10, and Ollie, 9, the grandchildren of his late brother. Determined to proceed with his planned road trip, PJ takes the two children, Sophie, and his strange new cat Pancakes, who had been offering comfort in an assisted living facility. A series of dramatic and wild adventures awaits them.
The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett skillfully blends tragedy and comedy. Each character in this novel has experienced significant loss, and together, this quirky group of six (including the all-important Pancakes) works to form a new and unconventional support system, perhaps even becoming a family. Although an irresponsible alcoholic may not be the ideal main character, PJ's heart is in the right place. I particularly liked Luna, who is convinced that a soap opera star, originally from Pondville, is her biological father, and finding him becomes part of the journey. This book focuses heavily on death, making it darker than it might seem. But it had a warmth and tenderness that was very appealing. If you're up for something unique, give this book a try.
