In 1946, Anne Bishop is a student at Vassar. Having faced anti-Semitism in high school, when she discovered certain places were restricted, she decided to keep her Jewish identity a secret from her college friends. Her father had previously changed their family name from Berkowitz to Bishop. Anne tried to ignore the hurtful remarks, especially those aimed at fellow student Delia Goldhush, who had come to the U.S. with her father after the Germans invaded Paris. Delia's mother, a sculptor, was part of the Resistance and was presumed killed. Delia openly embraced her Jewish identity, while Anne feared that her true background would be discovered. The two young women formed a short-lived friendship. Their paths crossed again when they both traveled to Paris and Palestine, with Anne seeking to regain Delia's friendship after a betrayal at Vassar.Â
In this touching novel, Kitty Zeldis brings us into the post-World War II lives of two very different young women, each dealing with their sense of identity. In One of Them, Delia, who travels to Paris in search of her mother's artwork, stored away during the war, is a strong and complex character. Anne, who has also faced loss, must discover her inner strength and determine what truly matters in life. This is a story of friendship and forgiveness that addresses difficult subjects. I am pleased to recommend this book.
