With Love from Harlem - the story of jazz musician Hazel Scott.

Hazel Scott was an American jazz and classical pianist and singer who was a superstar in the 1940s and 1950s. Her story is told in ReShonda Tate's biographical historical fiction, With Love from Harlem. It begins in 1943, with Hazel performing at Harlem's Café Society, a unique club because of its integrated audience. It is there that she meets the charismatic and married Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., a local preacher with great political aspirations. Their attraction is immediate. Their love story develops as Hazel's career flourishes and Powell gets elected to Congress. They become the country's most famous Black couple.

Hazel's personal life was a tumultuous one, yet she remained committed to fighting for racial equality. The rise of McCarthyism and the Blacklist impacted her career and set her on a new path. She was a lifelong friend of Billie Holiday and many luminaries of the day. It's quite a story and unfortunate that Hazel Scott's historical significance has largely been forgotten. While some fictionalization was made, Tate stays true to the facts. You'll be inspired to learn more about this remarkable woman.
