Tessa and Theo Armstrong, twins raised in England by a British father and a French mother, were inseparable until college. By 1942, with the German invasion of France, Theo enlisted in the Royal Air Force. And while her family believed she was supporting the war effort by joining women providing first aid, Tessa had secretly become part of the SOE (Special Operations Executive) and traveled to France as a spy. As the war intensifies, both siblings face peril, yet it is Tessa who, using a series of fake identities, faces the greatest threat. Despite their special bond, Theo and Tessa have kept deep secrets from one another. And once Tessa goes missing, Theo is relentless in his quest to find out what happened to her.
The Shock of the Light by Lori Inglis Hall is a powerful novel told from the perspectives of both Theo and Tessa. It's a sweeping tale that is much more than a war story, spanning from 1938 to 2003, showing the love between the siblings and their strength and bravery. The author's use of light and darkness is incredibly effective. In this impressive debut novel, Hall was inspired by the courageous British women who went behind enemy lines in German-occupied France to serve the SOE, many of whom lost their lives. In the book's later years, a character named Edie is introduced, who is a PHD candidate doing research on these brave women. After reading this moving story, you'll also be inspired to learn more about them.
