The Golden Couple - a therapist tries to unravel a web of lies threatening a marriage.

Set in the Washington DC area, Avery Chambers has achieved local fame by being controversial. She’s a therapist but lost her license because of her unorthodox methods of treatment. And she became a whistleblower when a client confided in her that her employer, drug company Acelia, was about to get FDA approval for a drug they knew caused an unacceptable risk of death. Marissa Bishop seeks Avery’s help with her marriage to Matthew after she cheated on him. She had read about Avery’s unique 10-session method of treatment and hoped it would work for her and her husband. When the couple meets with Avery, the first thing Marissa does is confess her infidelity. After some reluctance, Matthew, furious and distraught, agrees to proceed with the sessions.

What starts out as a family drama turns into an intense domestic thriller, as fans of the writing duo of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen would expect. The Golden Couple is told through the eyes of Marissa and Avery. Avery, we learn, has troubles of her own. Acelia wants to know the name of the person who told her about the poor results of their drug trial and while Avery thought her call to the FDA was anonymous, the company has her name, address and number. Their threats start to accelerate.

As the story progresses, we learn that just about everyone is hiding something. And Avery wants to uncover the lies. Her tactics, however, start becoming a bit creepy. And the actions of Marissa, her husband, the man she slept with, her very odd assistant and others in this wild, often over-the-top story will keep your head spinning. I enjoyed getting tangled up in this creative web of lies.

Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read The Golden Couple in advance of its release. I’ve read and enjoyed all of the reliably twisty thrillers Hendricks and Pekkanen have written together and will keep reading whatever they write.
