It's 2007, two years after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, and a group of friends are celebrating New Year's Eve together in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Over the years, the lives of Mia, Marco, Sasha, Theo, Richie and Adam unfold as they reunite at various events, including a 2014 wedding in Cancún, a Hampton's party in 2018, and a 2022 Halloween party in suburban New Jersey. Time draws some of them closer, while others drift further apart. There's joy, and there's heartbreak, especially since it is revealed early on that the final gathering, in 2024, is a funeral.
While So Old, So Young by Grant Ginder centers on a group of millennials, the themes of time passing and looking back resonate for everyone. (Baby boomers might make the inevitable comparison to the 1983 movie, The Big Chill.) With realistic and relatable situations, Ginder makes you care about each of the friends, even when they are hurtful, stubborn and make bad decisions. There's a lot of humor within the storytelling which lightens things up nicely. However, the challenges of facing life's choices and disappointments are difficult subjects. It might leave you with a lump in your throat.
