Missing Sam - a story about a missing woman evolves into an exploration of family, religion, and social issues.

It's the July 4th weekend of 2019 and Samantha "Sam" O'Malley, an English professor, is living with her wife Aliya "Ali" Mirza, an interior designer, in a lovely, upscale suburb of Cleveland. While happily married, they occasionally argue over Sam's jealousy. The morning after their latest quarrel, Sam goes for a run, leaving her phone behind. When she doesn't return, Ali initially thinks Sam just needs some space. But after many hours go by, she fears something terrible has happened to Sam. She enlists the help of the local police. As Sam's disappearance makes the local news and hits social media, Ali, a Muslim whose parents were from India, faces racial and homophobic prejudice. The story shifts between Sam and Ali's points of view. While Sam is a victim, Ali too has been victimized. Ali can't give up hope that Sam will be found as the attacks on her character have caused her business to suffer, adding to the nightmare she is living.

Thrity Umrigar is known for her rich and emotional literary fiction. In Missing Sam, she incorporates aspects of a mystery thriller. Beyond discovering what happened to Sam, this powerful story explores family, religion, and social issues. Both women have been estranged from their parents due to their sexuality, and Sam's tragedy brings them back into the picture. The story also weaves in the onset of the pandemic. Umrigar skillfully ties all these elements together. It's a memorable story.
