Inside Man - the second installment in the clever police procedural series "Head Cases".

In Head Cases (2025), author John McMahon introduced the fictional Patterns and Recognition (PAR) unit of the FBI, comprised of a team with advanced analytical and technical expertise, led by Gardner Camden. In the first book, the FBI considers shutting down the unit, but in the second installment, Inside Man, the team has demonstrated its significant value. In their latest case, the team is investigating J.P Sandoval, who appears to be amassing weapons and may be planning something big in Washington D.C. for the militia group he leads. When their informant Freddie Pecos is murdered, the PAR team fears that Sandoval has discovered his connection to the FBI. However, it seems the informant's death might instead be linked to a seemingly unrelated string of murders. So, in addition to trying to prevent a terrorist act, PAR is also on the trail of a serial killer.

This enjoyable story is told by Gardner, who a problem-solving expert keenly aware that he is different. His mother skillfully raised her neurodivergent son to adapt his talents and nature to the world around him. His perfect memory makes him great in his job, but it also means he recalls all the challenges he has faced in personal relationships. His sweet bond with his daughter Camila brings out an emotional side to someone who is primarily led by logic and facts. He grapples with his feelings for his colleague, Cassie Pardo, a mathematician. Every member of PAR possesses distinct skills and is very likeable. The book's crime-solving is innovative and ingenious, with a lot of clever twists and turns. This series has real staying power.
