It's 1989 and Violet, Vail, and Dodie Esmie, now adults, remain emotionally scarred by the traumatic loss of their six-year-old brother Ben, which occurred eighteen years earlier. Violet, who can see ghosts, believes that Ben has summoned the siblings to return to their childhood home. Desperate to learn what happened to Ben, they head to Fell, New York. Once back in their home, each of the siblings start experiencing disturbing visions and dreams from their past. As the hauntings intensify, the truth about Ben might finally be uncovered.
Author Simone St. James has previously taken us to Fell, New York in The Sun Down Motel (2020). A Box Full of Darkness, while not a sequel, is another chilling, atmospheric thriller set in a place that has experienced more than its fair share of tragedies. This novel is a compelling and unsettling ghost story. It is also about loss and guilt, featuring interesting, well-developed characters. Although I normally avoid stories involving paranormal activities, I always make an exception for this author's books.
Rated 4 out of 5 stars.
