The Last to Vanish - an engaging, atmospheric thriller.

Nestled in the Appalachians, Cutter's Pass, North Carolina has the unfortunate distinction of being described as the most dangerous town in the state. Six tourists have gone missing over the last twenty-five years. No bodies have ever been found. A group of four students called The Fraternity Four disappeared in 1997; Alice Kelly in 2012; Farrah Jordan in 2019. Journalist Landon West headed to Cutter's Pass in 2022 to try and learn more about these disappearing hikers. And he too goes missing. Months later, the writer's brother Trey travels to Cutter's Pass and checks into The Passage Inn, the area's resort. He is placed in the same cabin his brother had occupied and starts asking questions. Abby Lovett is the manager of the Inn. After ten years, she still feels very much an outsider in this tight-knit community. Trey's appearance raises new questions about what secrets this small town may be hiding. Author Megan Miranda has a real talent for creating highly atmospheric thrillers and with The Last to Vanish, she has done it again. The detailed description of Cutter's Pass places the reader into its remote, dark and claustrophobic mountain setting. And while everyone is friendly, there's an underlying sense that people know more than they are admitting. The book started slow and took a bit of time building its suspense. Yet in the end, it was worth the wait.

Rated 4 out of 5 stars.
