Former Detroit police officer Kurt Argento is on the run after encountering some serious trouble in Arizona. He has assumed a new identity and is now working as a handyman at a church in South Dakota, hiding from dangerous men who want to kill him and police who would like to arrest him. But he's a good man at heart, and when he believes the life of a 17-year-old Syrian refugee named Majed is in danger, he steps in to protect him. And once tragedy strikes, they head to California, where the boy's uncle lives. Majed has no idea why he is being threatened, but someone with very deep pockets will spare no expense in tracking him down to bring him back to South Dakota.

Author Adam Plantinga is a sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department, which has given all three books in his Kurt Argento series exceptional realism. Dark Country is a high-octane thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. My heart was beating heavily as this action-packed story unfolded. While parts of this intense tale were brutal, the most cringe-worthy parts, committed by one of the psychopath criminals on the hunt for Majed, reinforced Kurt's toughness and resourcefulness. Many series these days are easy to dive into mid-stream, and you can certainly start with this book. But do yourself a favor and read all three, as The Ascent and Hard Town are excellent too.

Many thanks to Grand Central Publishing for the gifted advance.
